1960s Singer Behind Popular Hit Song ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ Dead at 70-Years-Old

The group “Tokens” was a popular band in the 60s, most notable for their hit song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, which topped the charts during that time for multiple weeks. This song has been featured in movies, tv shows and music. With that fact, the Tokens’ version was an all-time favorite for many.

Sadly, Mitch Margo, a member/singer from this famous group died, on November 24th. News about his death was not publicly announced until days later.

Los Angeles Times reports that Margo’s family confirmed he died of natural causes.

Tokens also recorded other hit songs in the 60s including “I Hear Trumpets Blow,” “Portrait of My Love” and “He’s in Town,” reported the New York Times. The band’s success was truly outstanding, especially since they accomplished so much as young teenagers.

Margo also wrote songs for other musicians besides his own band. Following his music career, he served in the army for a few years.

Many took to social media to express their thoughts and condolences for Margo.
