Are you one of the many people that suffer from eczema? WebMD says that researchers suspect the cause of this irritating skin problem is probably an overactive immune system combined with allergies or asthma. A flare-up means patches of itchy skin that can get so bad it keeps you up at night.
While no cure is available, a number of home treatments are available. If the eczema gets too bad, be sure to see your doctor for help. Otherwise, try one of these 6 home remedies to tame your itching skin.
1. Sun exposure. One of the simplest treatments for eczema according to the Mayo Clinic is “light therapy.” If you live where the climate is amenable, simply expose the area of skin to the sun for short periods of time and let the light do its work.
2. Moisturize. Moisturizing your skin with a high-oil content moisturizer twice a day is what the National Eczema Association recommends. Coconut oil can be used straight and applied directly to the skin after a shower and before bed. Healthline shares that it is an excellent moisturizer and has anti-inflammatory properties to help with the itch.
3. Oatmeal bath. Soaking your irritated skin in a bath can be very soothing. With the right ingredients, you can make the bath help moisturize as well. The Hearty Soul mixes 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup finely ground oats together to make a soothing and moisturizing tub soak.
4. Right clothes. Sweating is a definite irritant for eczema sufferers. The Mayo Clinic recommends wearing clothing that allows the skin to breath so that you don’t sweat excessively and have that sweat trapped next to your skin.
5. Hydrocortisone cream. WebMD recommends applying an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to your eczema when you have an outbreak to help clear it up.
6. Cucumbers. Although no studies have been performed to see if this home remedy actually works, Search Home remedy recommends putting slices of cucumber on outbreaks for 10 to 15 minutes to find relief. Medical News Today does say that cucumbers are believed to sooth inflamed skin, so you can give this a try and see if it works.
Whether you go with sitting in the sun for a while or slathering your body in moisturizing oils, you may find you can solve your eczema woes through some simple treatments at home.
